At the end of two long days of coach rides and cold temperatures--currently -3 in Arras!--the students on Battlefields Trip 2 are tucked in to their rooms for the night.
After our early start yesterday, we arrived on schedule to visit the Memorial to the Missing and the Wellington Quarry in Arras. We checked in to the hotel and had supper at a nearby restaurant, followed by a bit of bowling.
Today, our longest day of action, saw us at breakfast in the hotel at 8:00 a.m. before setting off on a series of visits around The Somme. We started with Devonshire Cemetery and a German Military Cemetery near Fricourt, moved on to the Ulster and Thiepval Memorials, and finished off the morning with a tribute to OO Jack Dewar in Ancre British Military Cemetery. Lunch was enjoyed in the warmth of the coach before we headed out to explore the frontlines at Beaumont-Hamel with our fearless leaders Mr Roberts and Dr Shepard. Final stops in the late afternoon were to the famous Sunken Lane and two different mine craters. This evening we enjoyed a walk around Arras to see the beautiful restored square before supper and returning to the hotel.
Breakfast tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. and then off on our final visit to Vimy Ridge before heading back to England. A bit of shopping in Calais has even been mentioned!
More updates tomorrow and pictures to come once they've been uploaded.
